If you are looking to play hockey for the very first time, you might think that your shoe size will be the same as your hockey skate size. But of course they couldn’t make it that easy — there are a few things to consider when looking at a hockey skate size guide. Here are some tips to finding your perfect hockey skate size:

Hockey skate sizes

There are plenty of guides out there on how to find your perfect hockey skate size at home, but doing those measurements can be very complex to do and there is no guarantee you will find your right size from that. What I recommend is to learn more about how hockey skate sizes work and then try on skates before buying anything.

Men’s hockey skate sizes

Men’s hockey sizes will be 1 to 1.5 sizes smaller than your shoe size. So, if you wear a size 10 shoe, you might wear an 8.5 or a 9.

Women’s hockey skate sizes

Women’s hockey skates will be around 3 sizes smaller than your shoe size. So if you wear a 9, you will probably be closer to a size 6 in a hockey skate. I personally wear a size 8.5 shoe and a size 5.5 hockey skate.

Try on skates

My no. 1 tip for new hockey players is to always try on skates before you purchase your first pair. You can do this at a number of places, including:

  • Your local sporting goods store.
  • Hockey pro shop.
  • Used sporting goods store, like Play It Again.
  • Your local rink.

Your local rink probably has open skating, which means they probably have plenty of skates. If you tell them that you are trying to figure out your hockey skate size, they will most likely let you try some different sizes of skates to try out. Try them on until you find a size that works for you.

Go to your local pro shop

Employees at local hockey pro shops are so great at helping you figure out what equipment is right for you, and that includes skates. Yes, they are trying to make a sale, but they are also working to grow the game of hockey as much as anyone else and they are usually really good at pointing you in the right direction.

If you go to your local pro shop and explain that you are a beginner adult hockey player and would like to find the right size of skates, they will work with you and give you recommendations for the perfect skates, including why you might like (or not like) certain brands or types of skates.

Find your hockey skate size

When I started playing hockey, I wore the wrong size for a year and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t skate correctly. Your hockey skate size is incredibly important and you should not leave it to online hockey skate size guides. Try on skates and ask for advice from local experts until you find your perfect pair, because your skates will be the most important piece of your hockey equipment when you are learning to play hockey.
